Plasticine

January 6, 2010

After drawing fish, octopuses, other creatures and trying to invent my own and then getting a bit bored with it all, decided to go down a different route.  Been experimenting with making plasticine models of made up creatures. Ideas that came from tutorial today –

  • Make info posters on these made up creatures, photos of them on a white background with latin names and descriptions underneath, like in a textbook.
  • Do a flow chart sort of poster with the creatures evolving/the different elements of them appearing on different creatures
  • Angela said to keep making models more quickly as they still look a bit too much like normal fish at the moment but i need to keep the humour in them.
  • Neil mentioned a poster he saw in a fish and chip shop which was a tall picture showing from the top of the sea down to the really weird creatures at the bottom – could make up a set like this and photograph my creatures in it

Hidden sea creatures

December 11, 2009

Decided to concentrate on things that are hidden under the sea, as it’s something that fascinates me, imagining what how many creatures we haven’t yet discovered.

Illegal Art

November 26, 2009

Illegal art is a group of artists who create interactive public art. I think this relates to the Hidden brief, as their works tend to reveal people’s feelings, whilst letting them remain hidden behind the anonymity of the project.

Laura Laine

November 26, 2009

I really like Laura Laine’s style of drawing, they are lovely smooth pencil drawings, not sure how to link pictures from her site though.

James Roper, another artist who does really nice, intricate pencil drawings.

Pete Willis

November 26, 2009

I love this style of drawing, especially the hand drawn text. I like the background the drawing’s done on as well, I’m going to start experimenting with drawing onto something other than white cartridge paper, which seems to be all I use.

Souther Salazar

November 26, 2009

I love the colours Souther Salazar uses in his work, and his style of drawing.

Bizarrely, he doesn’t seem to have a proper website. All his work’s on his facebook page.

Andy Martin

Annabel Wright

I love her style of drawing, and the watercolours with fine line over the top

Luke Best

His work is collage, but using his own images rather than found ones.

Nature

November 26, 2009

Thinking about things hidden in nature/things you can’t see but which are integral to their structure. For example the Golden Ratio.

Hidden things that animals have – poison

fish with lights in their mouths – hiding from their prey

fish that hide on the bottom of the sea that look like sand

It is possible that advertising signs in rural areas reduce driver boredom, which many believe is a contribution to highway safety. On the other hand, drivers may fixate on a billboard which unexpectedly appears in a monotonous landscape, and drive straight into it (a phenomenon known as “highway hypnosis”).[3]

Inside

November 25, 2009

What do people hide inside them?

This is an imaginary creature, but it’s fun.. looks like it’s eaten someone’s head. I like this cartoony sort of stuff but I don’t think I’m any good at it. Maybe I’ll try it.

What’s inside a gingerbread man? http://web.mac.com/moistproduction/flash/index.html
Can’t get images from this one as it’s flash i think.

X-rays of speech, maybe an idea – what people really want to say when they are speaking. Might try drawings of faces with text inside? Need to find pictures of skulls

http://skulladay.blogspot.com/2007/06/original-36525-skulls-1-122.html – blog by a man who drew a skull every day for a year.  Not that well executed, but good idea.
